Replica research
Replica research is one of MCI’s areas of expertise, developed over 40+ years of experience in pressure and high temperature plants worldwide.
Non-destructive materials analysis
How does replica research work?
This non-destructive method allows us to assess the microstructure of materials without damaging the component. It is usually performed on-site during a planned plant shutdown or during production in areas where high operating temperatures do not prevail.
Methodology:
- Surface preparation by grinding and polishing to about 1 micron.
- Etching the surface to reveal the microstructure.
- Application of a special film that copies the microstructure (replica).
- Examination of the replica in our laboratory in Geleen or our mobile lab during factory stops.
With replicas, we can not only analyze microstructures, but also track crack tips and substantiate residual life issues.
Various replica methods and complementary techniques such as micro-hardness measurements and PMI element analyses reinforce our conclusions.
Through our high level of expertise, we obtain highly accurate information that is critical for strategic maintenance decisions, residual life and sustainable repairs.
Integrated problem approach: from inspection to solution
Leaks or plant failures? The OEM asks questions but does not provide answers. Different parties each have their own interests, often preventing a real solution.
MCI offers an integrated approach that brings together independent inspections, laboratory testing and practical solutions. We work on the basis of facts and not assumptions. We ensure that your facilities remain or begin to perform reliably and safely.
